❤️ Why you will love this recipe

    • Easy: this is a quick and easy recipe made with a few simple steps (and no cooking involved!).
    • Delicious: yummy treat bursting with flavors from the fresh fruit and dark chocolate.
    • Frozen dessert: keep these yogurt bites in your freezer, they make for a great frosty summer dessert.
    • Healthy: they are healthy, thanks to the vitamin and fiber-rich fresh strawberries, probiotic-packed yogurt and mineral and antioxidant-filled dark chocolate.
    • Kid-friendly: they are a hit with kids, plus they are so simple your little ones can help you make them!
    • Suits many diets: these frozen strawberry yogurt bites are vegan and dairy-free (if using soy yogurt, cashew yogurt or almond yogurt), and gluten-free.

    🗒 Ingredient notes (+ substitutions)

Showing are the ingredients needed to make strawberry yogurt clusters.
    • Strawberries: You will need fresh strawberries for making these bites, which work better than frozen strawberries. If you must use frozen strawberries, then thaw them just enough so you are able to chop them in small bites, but not completely or they will release too much juice and it will be hard to form clusters.
    • Yogurt: you can use your favorite yogurt to make these yogurt bites! I used the Greek-style dairy-free yogurt from Kite Hill (vanilla flavored). Try using full fat if possible for the best texture and flavor and play around with the flavor of the yogurt if you wish.
    • Sweetener: this is optional, but if your yogurt isn't sweetened, then add a splash of maple syrup to the yogurt mix.
    • Chocolate: you can use your favorite chocolate to make the clusters, such as milk chocolate or white chocolate, but I think that dark chocolate works best. I used the semi-sweet dark chocolate chunks from Enjoy Life.
    • Coconut oil: you won't need much, but melting coconut oil with the chocolate helps create a smooth and softer chocolate crust around the clusters. Use refined oil to avoid a coconut-flavored result.

    📝 Variations

    • Protein-rich: add a spoonful of peanut butter or protein powder to the yogurt mix. These additions can also help if you find your yogurt mix to be too thin to create clusters.
    • Vanilla: I used a vanilla-flavored yogurt, but if you use plain yogurt, then add about a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
    • Almonds: add some chopped almonds to the yogurt mix or sprinkle some over the chocolate quickly after covering the clusters.
    • Sweet and salty: add a sprinkle of coarse sea salt over the chocolate before it sets.
    • Less chocolate (and less sugar): you can drizzle a little melted chocolate over the yogurt clusters instead of completely covering them. In that case cut the chocolate chips and coconut oil amount in half.

Step 3: To a bowl, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil, then melt using the microwave. You can start warming for one minute, then warm up for additional 20-30 seconds at a time until soft.

Step 4: Let the melted chocolate rest in the bowl for one minute, then whisk well until smooth.

    💡 Helpful tips

    • Do not add extra moisture to the strawberry yogurt mix or it will thin out the consistency. This would make the cluster harder to shape. So, be sure to pat dry the strawberries carefully once you clean them. If your mix is too thin, then you can add a little bit of nut butter to thicken the yogurt.
    • You will need to work fast when covering the clusters with the chocolate. Because the yogurt clusters are frozen, the melted chocolate hardens and sticks to it quickly and easily! If you go too slow and keep dipping the clusters in the warm chocolate, then you risk creating a layer that's too thick.
    • Transfer the cluster to parchment paper so you can easily remove them once frozen.
    • The size of the clusters does not matter much since you won't bake them. You can make smaller or larger ones, although I think smaller clusters are easier to handle when covered with chocolate.
    • Once completely frozen, the clusters are pretty hard and crunchy. For a smoother result, then let them briefly thaw for about 10-15 minutes before enjoying!

❗️ How to store strawberry yogurt clusters

These yogurt clusters are meant to stay in the freezer until ready to eat. If you keep them at room temperature, they might turn too soft and the yogurt will find its way out of the clusters, potentially making a mess. It's best to keep them in an airtight container in the freezer and grab one at a time when needed.

You can eat them straight from the freezer (they will be quite hard and crunchy, but delicious) or let them thaw briefly at room temperature for a few minutes before enjoying them.

    ❓ FAQs

Are these strawberry yogurt clusters healthy?

The yogurt and fresh strawberries are so good for you and provide fiber, vitamins and some probiotics. The chocolate layer can also be a healthy-ish addition, especially if using semi-sweet antioxidant-rich dark chocolate. For a healthier option that has less added sugar, then you can drizzle a little chocolate over the clusters instead of completely covering them.

Can I use other fruits to make these yogurt clusters?

Yes, feel free to swap the strawberries for blueberries, raspberries or peaches!

    Equipment

    • Baking sheet or large plate
    • Parchment paper
    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Mixing bowls

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup yogurt - I used Greek-style dairy-free vanilla yogurt from Kite Hill
    • 2 cups fresh strawberries - chopped in small pieces
    • 1 tbsp maple syrup - optional (depends if your yogurt is sweet already)
    • 1¾ cup dark chocolate chips - see notes, I used dairy-free chocolate chunks from Enjoy Life
    • 1 tbsp coconut oil

    Instructions

    • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, strawberries and maple syrup (if using).
    • Use 2 spoons to transfer the mix into clusters over a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. You should have about 15 clusters. Transfer to the freezer until completely frozen.
    • In another mixing bowl, add the chocolate chunks and coconut oil, then melt using the microwave. You can start by warming for one minute, then for additional 20-30 seconds at a time until the chocolate chips are soft. Then, let them rest for 1 minute before stirring until smooth.
    • One frozen yogurt cluster at a time, cover them with the melted chocolate and transfer them back over the backing sheet. Keep going until all the clusters are covered. If you want to use less chocolate, then you can melt half the amount of chocolate chips and simply drizzle the melted chocolate over the clusters.
    • You can enjoy the chocolate-covered clusters right from the freezer or let them thaw for about 15 minutes before enjoying.
