Transfer the canned refried beans to a bowl and mix with a small amount of water until smooth and spreadable. You can also add some spices if desired (chili powder, dried oregano, etc). Set aside.
In a bowl, add the diced avocado, tomatoes, red onion and cilantro. Add lime juice and salt to taste, then stir until combined.
Gently spread the refried beans over the tostadas.
Garnish with the avocado salad. Top with more cilantro and some hot sauce (if desired), then serve right away.

If you don't have refried beans, then simply mash a can of black beans with a little salt, seasoning of your choice (chili powder, oregano) and a few splashes of water until the desired consistency.
Wait just before serving before prepping the avocado salad to prevent oxidation (and browning) of the avocado.
Chop the avocado into small cubes so they fit well on the tostadas.
Be as delicate as you can when topping the crispy tostadas since they can break if you press on them too much.
