Treat yourself to this rich and velvety goodness of chocolate milk tea. This refreshing drink combines oat milk, raw cacao powder, boba pearls and sweetener of your choice. You can also include or not black tea for a little kick of caffeine. The ingredients needed are easy-to-find and making a homemade chocolate boba is actually so simple and quick! This version is naturally vegan and dairy-free.

Instructions
Make the black tea (optional)
If using black tea, then start by brewing it (you can omit this step): add the tea bag to a small mug and pour the hot water over. Let the bag steep for 3-5 minutes moving the bag around in the water once in a while to help the extraction process. Once done, remove the bag + discard and set the tea aside to cool down until ready to use.
Cook the boba
Bring a pot of water to a boil (about 3 cups) and then add the boba pearls. Then, keep simmering for about 5-7 minutes uncovered or until they float on the surface and are tender to your taste (check for doneness by tasting them and cook longer if desired). Then, turn off the heat and let the pearls stand in the hot water for another 2 minutes before draining them. Transfer to a small bowl and add a little maple syrup to them (optional). Stir well and set aside.
Make the chocolate milk
In a blender, combine the black tea, oat milk, cacao powder and sweetener. Blend on high until smooth, which should only take a few seconds. Then, taste and adjust sweetness to your preference.
Combine and serve
Divide the cooked boba in between 2 serving glasses and then fill with ice cubes. Pour the chocolate milk over, sprinkle some more cacao powder if desired and enjoy with a boba straw.

Notes
This drink is best when enjoyed right away. That being said, you can brew the black tea and make the chocolate milk ahead of time. Keep in a large jar in the fridge for up to 3 days. When ready to enjoy your bubble tea, then cook the boba, give the chocolate milk a good shake and combine in a serving glass with plenty of ice cubes.
Feel-free to completely omit the black tea, which is what I do when sharing with my kids. The flavor is still amazing!
You can modify the recipe to your taste, such as adjusting how sweet you want it to be, add some more flavoring ingredients such as cinnamon or vanilla extract and also use different kinds of milk. Check out the blog post for more ideas!
